Poindexter Slough Fisheries Enhancement

for the Beaverhead Watershed Committee

We received the Award of Excellence from Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks for our modification of 4.75 miles of channel width and depth.

the problem

Though once a natural side channel of the Beaverhead River, Poindexter Slough was controlled by a headgate prior to our work. The Beaverhead Watershed Committee retained us to survey and develop restoration recommendations for improving fish habitat and water quality along four miles of Poindexter Slough.

Our Solution

  • Restore appropriate width-to-depth ratios for riffles and pools
  • Remove or isolate fine sediment deposits from the stream bed
  • Encourage natural recruitment of willows and other woody riparian vegetation
