Featured Projects

We design and implement projects based on the ecological and physical processes found in nature. Our reputation for innovation has allowed us to restore rivers, streams, and wetlands across sixteen states, improve wild habitat and water quality, increase native plant diversity, promote environmental health, and preserve land values for future generations.

Conceptual Restoration Plan

Montana Department of Justice Natural Resource Damage Program

The Problem

In 1983, the State of Montana filed a lawsuit in federal District Court against the Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO) for injuries to the natural resources in the Upper Clark Fork River Basin. The Montana v. ARCO lawsuit, sought damages from ARCO, contending that decades of mining and smelting in the Butte and Anaconda areas had greatly harmed natural resources in the basin and deprived Montanans of their use.

Our Solution

To remove the mine wastes left in place, we:
  • Eliminated known sources of inorganic contamination to alluvial groundwater and surface water
  • Restored the area to a beneficial end use
  • Enhanced the area riparian corridors
  • Improved the quality of the fishery in Blacktail and Upper Silver Bow Creeks
